Caroline Wozniacki won her first match of the U.S. Hard Court summer swing at New Haven and the title as well. Wozniacki defeated Petra Cetkovska 6-4, 6-1 to win her fourth New Haven tournament in a row. Although this tournament lacks the top players of the previous U.S. Open Series tournaments, this win gives Wozniacki some much needed confidence heading into the U.S. Open as she had come into the tournament winless.
Cetkovska was my story of the tournament as she was a qualifier who scored several notable victories to reach the final. She defeated Agnieszka Radwanska in three sets, Marion Bartoli in a very close two set battle and Li Na in a long semifinal match where she saved match point and eventually won 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (9). It is no wonder that Cetkovska appeared visibly tired in the final match. I believe that had she had more energy and rest, she would have made the final match more competitive as she was hitting many winners and dictating play against the passive world’s number one player.
