In a few hours the last Grand Slam of the season will be under way! This year, Serena Williams comes in as the overwhelming favorite to take the title but other players like Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, Li Na and Victoria Azarenka will be competing just as hard for the title. Here is a preview of the draw!
Top Half
The easiest quarter of the draw is that of the world number one Caroline Wozniacki. She has what the tennis world calls a “cakewalk” to the quarterfinals. Not surprising after those recent reports of rigged draws for top seeds at majors. If Wozniacki advances to the semifinal, she is slated to play Williams for a spot in the final. Williams, on the other hand, has a very tricky draw beginning in the first round against Bojana Jovanovski. Jovanovski is a talented young Serbian who has been steadily rising up the rankings. Unfortunately for Azarenka, Williams was drawn in her quarter of the draw and if both women win their first two matches then they will meet in the third round. Williams could play Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round and Her quarterfinal match-up could see her face Francesca Schiavone or Jelena Jankovic. Williams can face she can face Wozniacki or Na in the semifinal. The top half also contains other talented players such as Andrea Petkovic, Daniela Hantuchova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Jie Zheng and Shahar Peer.
Bottom Half
The two biggest names that comprise the bottom half are Venus Williams and Sharapova. Luckily, they can only meet at the latest stage possible—the semifinal. Williams faces a tough test earlier on when she potentially plays Sabine Lisicki in the second round. Other than that, if healthy, Venus should be able to reach the fourth round where she is seeded to play the second seed Vera Zvonareva. Samantha Stosur or Marion Bartoli would likely face Williams in the quarterfinal match. Sharapova will play Heather Watson in her first round match and her draw is almost as easy as that of the top ranked player. Sharapova should reach the fourth round with ease where she could play Julia Goerges. Kvitova or Agnieszka Radwanska are potential opponents in the quarterfinal.
I’m sure excited for the Open to kick off! My dream final would be Serena Williams vs. Maria Sharapova (with Williams winning of course ;) ) Make it happen ladies!
And to all you fans out there, get ready to enjoy two weeks of exciting, action packed tennis!
